This poem is my first attempt at “newspaper blackout” poetry. It was inspired by Austin Kleon’s awesome new book, Newspaper Blackout; a book hailed by The New Yorker as a “cross between magnetic refrigerator poetry and enigmatic ransom notes, funny and zen-like, collages of found art,” and by New York magazine as “highbrow/brilliant.”
The process was summed up best by Kleon himself, “Newspaper + Marker = Poetry,” and I would urge anyone with a newspaper handy to pick up a marker and give it a go; its pretty fun. If you don’t know where to start, I’d recommend checking out Kleon’s homepage—here—or the Tumblr he specifically created for newspaper blackout poems.
