I’ve become a huge fan of London-based The Heavy and their unique blend of soul-inspired indie rock ever since a friend of mine told me he was going to one of their shows a few weeks ago. With crunchy guitars, funky horns and just a touch of James Brown in the soulful vocals of front-man Kelvin Swaby, The Heavy are one of the best bands to come out of a new indie movement that pays homage to 60s soul music while managing to stay relevant with today’s listeners.
Recently The Heavy made television history when, after finishing their hit single, “How You Like Me Now,” Late Show host David Letterman was so impressed he asked the band for an encore—an event which has never happened in the show’s twenty eight years on the air. Fans of the The Heavy can pick up their latest, The House That Dirt Built, or catch them live on their current North American tour which features support from fellow soulful indie rockers Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Mayer Hawthorne.
